Small business owners tend look over the benefits of blogging because they feel that it is unnecessary, they need to have a following, it’s only meant for famous people, etc. Then many businesses that do start a blog simply just don’t know what to write about, leading them down a path of boring, non-marketable content.

Blogging is not about writing or gaining a following. As a blogger, you want to be able to engage your audience. The following are a few tips to keep in mind when blogging for your small business:

1. Blog Consistently and Frequently

A company that does not blog consistently or only has old blogs on their site might be viewed under a more negative light than those who do not have any blogs at all.

Did you go out of business? Are you monitoring your site? Can I even trust your products or services if you couldn’t stick to this?

Meanwhile, a blog page that is being updated on a regular basis creates a strong online presence for your brand. It builds credibility, shows consistency, and proves your expertise in the industry.

2. Optimize Your Blog Posts

Keywords, keywords, keywords.

Keywords are what users type into search engines to produce results. When creating a blog topic it is important to keep keywords in mind if you want to show up in search engines for that specific search word.

Do not over-stuff your blog with keywords, but make sure to use them organically throughout the post.

3. Only One Topic Per Blog Post

Best practice would be to only use one keyword per blog entry. Strategic blogging uses a keyword or long-tail keyword within the title, headers, images, and content in order to drive SEO.

If you have more topics in mind, write them down and create more blogs! The more the merrier anyway, right? Make a list of topics you’d want to write about that you can reference back to in the future.

4. Educational, Not Promotional

Your audience does not want to read about your company... sorry.

A great blog entry promotes your services without necessarily being so blunt about it. What is your audience interested in? Put yourself in their shoes when deciding on a blog topic.

5. Be a Problem Solver

Target content to your desired customer. If a potential customer is going to your blog to receive an answer to a problem, then they might just trust you enough to hire you or buy your product.

6. Less is More

Your audience also doesn’t want to read a novel about your topic.

Be concise and make sure to answer the most important questions they may have. The more specific your blog topic, the easier it is to keep it short.

7. Write Like Your Audience

Search engines have developed the ability to mimic how a human would actually type when making a search, so keywords within your title don’t need to match up to the potential search.

However, write like the audience that you are trying to target in order for them to feel comfortable reading your post.

8. Calls to Action

CTAs, or Calls to Action, need to be represented within your post for the blog to produce quality leads. Always make sure you are matching the content to what you wish to promote.

9. Distribute

Social media is your best friend… and so are email newsletters.

Leverage your content between these in order to reach people directly. Your blog post isn’t doing much for your company if it’s just sitting on your website without any type of promotion.

10. Analyze

What topics are generating the most views, shares or leads? Keep a track record of all of your blogs in order to re-purpose keywords, and figure out what is working for your business and what isn’t.
